(HH) Effigy
stone - I found this one at an archaic village site along the Tygart Valley River in Colfax, WV. It was carved into the
likeness of a bird's head (cardinal). Even the raised eye and outline of the beak and black banding shows. I have included two
additional pictures with lines and color accenting the details. I have found only two other effigies on that beach
before (a turtle's head and another bird or duck). Birds were popular effigy subjects, and a cardinal would probably have
been especially admired for it's color. It is about 6" in tall and 1/2" thick. Has nice dark
patina from river staining. $125.00 Sale: 90.00
